Company background

A world leader in luxury, with a unique portfolio of over sixty prestigious brands. The group is active in five different sectors: wines and spirits; fashion and leather goods; perfumes and cosmetics; watches and jewellery; and selective retailing.

The challenge

The group was required to migrate its data from a number of ageing file servers to a new network-attached storage (NAS) system. In order to simplify the migration process and reduce costs, it decided to investigate methods to reduce the amount of data to be migrated.

The strategy

Having previously deployed NXPowerLite Desktop Edition in order to improve email efficiency, the group decided to evaluate NXPowerLite for File Servers. The group initially ran the software in analysis mode on one of its smaller file servers, and was impressed by the potential storage savings shown in the report generated. The group then purchased the software and began to optimise its files.

"I wanted to make my life easier for the migration, by reducing the amount of data I needed to migrate. I tried NXPowerLite and it has given me some promising results."

Olivier Przybylski, MIS/MIT Systems

The result

The group optimised several test files using NXPowerLite’s default settings. It then examined the visual quality of the files. Testers could not see any difference between the original and optimised versions – and neither could the files’ original creators.

Initial reports indicate that the group will reduce occupied storage by more than 30%, particularly on servers at the main corporate office in New York, where a lot of large PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets are created.

Overall, the group expects its investment in NXPowerLite for File Servers to be recouped within six to eight months.

Additional benefit areas

As well as reducing the amount of data to be migrated by one third, the group also expects to achieve significant savings in managed backup costs, as well as improved employee efficiency – as smaller, optimised files will be easier for staff to open, edit and share with other users.

"I had somebody checking with the end-users how the quality was, and they really didn’t see a difference."

Olivier Przybylski, MIS/MIT Systems

Conclusions

By using NXPowerLite to reduce occupied data storage, prior to a data migration project, the group expects to save a significant amount to time, money and effort. Managed backup costs will also be greatly reduced, while employee efficiency is increased.
